Nova’s Newborn Session

I had the pleasure of meeting Nova and her family for her newborn session with me. Nova was born weighing 4lb 7oz, the smallest baby I have photographed so far, but that didn’t stop her. She let us know all about the big personality she has hidden under all that tiny! She had the most beautiful, delicate features, and was adored by everyone- especially big sister Mia.

Thank you for coming to see me little lady! Here are just a few of my favourites from her session:

Liylah’s Newborn Session- Jess Evans Photography, Newborn Specialist

Its so lovely to have a run of girls for once, and I was excited to be able to add a touch of pink to my Newborn sessions! Liylah was such a sweetheart during her session, but my goodness she gave me a run for my money- this girl does not like to sleep without a fight! But with a beautiful little face like hers, who would want too? I adore her gallery, and I just wanted to share a few of my favourites:

I feel so blessed to be chosen by families to photograph their newest addition, and Amelia was no exception to this. She was just perfect, and I adored photographing her and her family. She had the sweetest little face, to match her adorable personality.

Newborn Photography Sessions- How do they work? Jess Evans Photography

JessEvansPhotography-C6bw

“Little boy, when you speak, I can’t help but kiss your cheek, I love the way you grab my hand, tell me all about your plans”

Oh this song just gets me every single time. I listen to the words, and i’m thrown straight back to 2014, the year my son was born. I reminisce his life so far, and I am just so proud of the little boy he is today. The newborn stage goes by SO fast. You blink and they are sitting up, crawling, walking, talking. They need you less and less each day, and the moments spent rocking a crying baby to sleep at 3am seem like a distant memory. All we have to look back on these memories are photographs. Photographs are such a precious gift we have been given- without them our children wouldn’t know just how tiny they were, once upon a time…

I believe having a Newborn session is the most important session you can have. They are so bespoke, and hard to recreate at home safely. I have had extensive training in newborn safety and posing. I know how to curl your tiny little bundle up, to get beautiful photographs of them at their smallest. I know how to wrap them, so they feel comfortable and secure enough to drift off into a peaceful sleep without any fuss. I know the poses that require composites, or spotters, in order for your baby to be safe at all times. Newborn photography is something I am very passionate about, and I want you to have the perfect images of you and your family. My sessions are very much baby led. Your little one calls the shots. We go at their pace, and I aim for everyone to feel relaxed from the moment you walk through the door.

“So how do your newborn sessions work?” is a question I get asked all the time. Most people are surprised at how little they actually need to do. I try and make the sessions as easy for parents as possible. I want you to be able to sit back and watch your newest addition looking oh-so-cute. I’ve even had a few parents nod off before, to catch up on their Zzz! Those first few weeks are so exhausting, and I think its nice to be able to sit and just take a minute sometimes!

I usually start by wrapping your baby, because it is the cosiest way for them to fall asleep, and they will feel very warm and secure. If you have other children, this is typically when I will do sibling poses, so then they are free to sit and watch a film, colour in or go to the park with grandma! If this is your first baby, I will go straight onto my props first. I have a beautiful range of different things I use to photograph baby in- from bowls, buckets, beds and hammocks. These are mostly all handmade, and bought from various venders all around the world! They are designed with newborns in mind, and thats what I love about them. And obviously, safety is the most important element of any newborn session, so I have taken extra measures to ensure props are secure (whether that means they are weighted at the bottom, or I have a spotter to hold it in a safe position).

Once props are over, I will then go onto the beanbag. This is where your baby will be unwrapped in stages, to get a variety of beautiful images with lots of textures, before they are unwrapped completely. I love the images I produce on the beanbag, because they are the most timeless photographs you can have. They are simple, with your baby being the star of the show. There’s no fuss- just them and all their little details, at their tiniest.

Finally, I always try and get everyone to have a few photographs as a family. You wont believe the amount of times I get a message after a gallery has been viewed, saying something along the lines of ‘thank you for persuading us to have photographs together’. I know, especially from experience, that the last thing we feel like after having a baby, is having our photograph taken. But you just can’t get that moment back. It is so important to exist in your children’s photos, because they will be the ones looking back at them in years to come. I usually take some of mum and baby individually, and then the same for dad and baby too. Then you can have some altogether, as a family. And if siblings are involved, then we will get these images at the beginning instead!

Sessions can take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours, and it is all dependent on your baby. Some take longer to settle, some like to feed more often, and some just don’t like to be disturbed whilst they are sleeping (and I’m a bit of a perfectionist- if it takes me longer to position their fingers correctly, then so be it!). But that is OK. I will take my time, and ensure your baby is always content.

I hope this has given you a little insight into how a Newborn Session works. I want all of my clients to enjoy the experience, just as much as I do, because the images I deliver to you are so very important. If you are thinking of booking a Newborn Session, please don’t hesitate to contact me, and we can discuss it further. I hope to see lots more newborns in 2019!

When should I book my newborn photography session? | Jess Evans Photography | Poole, Dorset

You’ve taken that test, you’ve probably cried a few tears of joy, you’ve had your scans and everything looks perfect. Then the fun begins. You can begin to organise and plan for this new life you’re bringing into your world. You will almost definitely create a ‘to do’ list, of things to purchase, places to visit, appointments to go to (I know mine was as long as my arm!). And booking your newborn photography session should be on that list!

This is a question I get asked all the time: ‘When is best to book in with you for my newborn photography session?’

The answer is, as soon as possible! My diary gets filled up months in advance, and being a newborn photographer, I have to make sure I always have space for those who have booked, which is why I only take on a few newborns each month. These little bundles of gorgeousness do not have a schedule, they are going to come when they are ready. Newborns are totally unpredictable from the get go!

As soon as you’ve had your 20 week scan, please contact me. I can then send you my newborn photography session booklet, which details everything you will really need to know. If you are happy and want to go ahead and book in, all I need is your due date, and a small session deposit to secure your date. That’s it.

E A S Y.

Then once little one makes their arrival, we can schedule your newborn photography session, and you can look forward to creating those beautiful memories you will treasure for years to come. They are only tiny for such a short while, and the ideal age to photograph a newborn is just 10 days old. Remember those tiny little details you’ll one day miss.

If you are pregnant, and looking to book a newborn photographer, don’t leave it too late. Contact me today, and lets capture the most precious moments of you, and your newborn baby, in my relaxing home studio in Poole, Dorset.
